Song: Lord You're Mighty - JJ Hairston & Youthful Praise (click to listen)
Scripture(s): 2 Chronicles 20

Stop Fighting. Start Seeking.
“Then Jehoshaphat was afraid and set his face to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. And Judah assembled to seek help from the LORD; from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.”
2 Chronicles 20:3-4 ESV
I sang in my church choir all throughout childhood and throughout my teen and college years. I was a proud soprano and absolutely loved singing (still do)… that is, as long as I didn’t have to sing a lead. It’s just something about being front and center that makes my voice want to crack, so I would happily decline whenever asked.
Well one day I wanted nothing more than to say no, but the original lead lost their voice and I was the only other person that knew the song and could sing the 2nd part lead. The song was Lord You’re Mighty by JJ Hairston & Youthful Praise, a song I knew through and through, all the way down to the adlibs. I was absolutely afraid, but I sang the lead, everything went fine (no voice cracks), and God was praised!
I share that little intro because this week Lord You’re Mighty is the song that I’m highlighting and back then I was singing about how mighty God is, but I didn’t think to take my fear of singing lead to Him in prayer the way that King Jehoshaphat did in 2 Chronicles 20.
Jehoshaphat’s prayer is a beautiful demonstration of what it looks like to know, understand, and believe in the mighty power of God. The moment he realized that he was up against nations that outnumbered Judah, he was afraid, and then he sought God instead of trying to fight on his own.
This may seem like a common response, but one of the reasons why it was so significant is because of King Jehoshaphat’s family history. His father, King Asa, relied on the power of another nation for protection by making an agreement instead of relying on God for protection (2 Chronicles 16). And like many of the kings during that time, it was common to follow in the footsteps of your fathers, more so than it was to follow God.
What we can learn from Jehoshaphat’s prayer is the importance of remembering the mighty God we serve when we are faced with our own battles. I believe that we fight way more than we have to because we either don’t believe in how powerful God truly is or because we forget. This prayer and the lyrics of this song work beautifully together to remind us.
“and said, ‘O LORD, God of our fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you.’” 2 Chronicles 20:6
“O Lord, how excellent is Your name is all the earth.
You sent your glory above the heavens and the earth.
When I think of all You made, the sun, the moon, and the stars.
No praise is high enough to express how great You are.
What a mighty God we serve.” Lyrics - Lord You’re Mighty
My friend, if you’ve been fighting and have yet to seek God in prayer and fasting, I encourage you to do so. Sometimes we do have to get in the fight, but we never have to fight alone or on our own strength. Other times, we may get a response similar to Jehoshaphat with God telling us that we won’t need to fight at all (2 Chron. 20:17). And the best part? We still win.
Imagine winning a battle that you didn’t have to fight. Only our Mighty God can do that.

Closing Prayer
“Dear Lord, I am so thankful that you are mighty and powerful. I am tired of fighting battles that you never meant for me to fight on my own.
